Grow Your Writing Income: Learn How

There are Many Kinds Copywriting Jobs You Can Do

Just to give you an idea, here are some different ways you can make money from home copywriting.

I’ve broken this information down into two sections; varieties and categories.

Varieties of Copywriting

What l mean by “varieties” is the different styles of writing you can do to make money writing copy.

Writing blog posts is different than writing articles for a magazine.  Copywriting for a direct mail piece is different than writing an email campaign.

But, hey – don’t panic!

First of all, you don’t have to do every kind of copywriting.  You can choose to become an excellent video sales letter writer or a copywriter who specializes in writing eBooks for people.

In other words, you don’t have to write copy for every kind of venue there is.

As a matter of fact, it’s recommended that you specialize.  Being a swiss army knife of copywriting is very difficult. You are better off becoming an expert in just a few of these different venues of copywriting, rather than a lot of them.

I have personally written direct mail pieces, blog posts, and copy for video sales letters.  I haven’t written any email campaigns yet, or radio advertisements.

Learn How To Do This First

If you learn all the basics of copywriting and practice them every day, you will be able to move into different areas of copywriting quite easily.

I started out learning how to write sales letters. Later, when I started to learn how to professionally write blog posts, I found out that writing posts were very similar to writing a sales letter.

So, when you really get the basics of writing sales copy down, you can easily transition into different areas of writing.

Below is a list of the varieties of copywriting you can do.

  • Direct mail
  • Sales letters
  • Email campaigns
  • Social media advertisements
  • Blog posts
  • Content marketing
  • Articles for magazines
  • Press releases
  • Billboards
  • Website pages
  • Ghostwriting books and eBooks
  • Speech writing
  • Video sales letters
  • Newsletters (Both electronic and direct mail)

This list could be much longer, but you get the idea.

The Categories or Markets

You can write for all kinds of different markets or categories, too. Here is the list of some of the different markets you can cater to:

  • Financial industry
  • Education
  • Self-help
  • Small businesses
  • Entertainment
  • Diet
  • Medical
  • Gaming
  • Automotive
  • Software as a Service
  • High tech startups

Each variety and category could have specialized areas within them.

For example, the education industry could have:

  • Course descriptions
  • Brochure copy
  • Reviews
  • Radio and TV ads
  • Promotional videos
  • Direct mail pieces
  • Course content
  • Elearning and Instructional Design copy
  • Text content

As a former teacher, I have moved towards the education field and written advertisements for various institutions of higher learning.

But within that realm, I’ve written blog posts for colleges, advertisements, and helped writing instructional design lessons. So, within each category, you could write different kinds of copy.

Write Where the Money Is

Some niches and industries to write for are great – others are not so good. One thing to keep in mind is that if you’re going to become a generalist in many different markets and categories, it will be difficult for you to make money from home as a copywriter.

If you are writing for the bed mattress market one day and a fishing pole market the next, and then you decide to take start writing blog posts about health and fitness, you’ll wear yourself out.

Why?

Because you have to learn all of the nuances of that industry and do a ton of research each day.

Let’s say that you want to write for the crypto-currency market in the financial field, and become an expert at it. Well, that would be so much easier. By the time you finish writing 3 or 4 blog posts and maybe a manual on how to start buying crypto, you’ll know more about that subject than 90% of the people on the planet.

And the financial market is huge and usually well funded. So, specializing in a field you know better than trying to write for every market and niche there is.

I’m not saying that you can’t write for other markets if someone is willing to pay you for it. But, staying in a market you know, understand and love will be far easier for you.

If you get good at that subject it is easier to market to it too. You don’t have to market yourself to a million different industries, and your reputation in that field as a writer will get around too.

The Most Profitable Markets

Finance

This is a very profitable niche. If you have an interest in the financial industries, then this market may be for you. The reason why good copywriters like this industry so much are because the businesses and companies have big budgets to pay for it. And there is a lot of work to be found in this industry, which makes it very attractive.

Tech Industry

You can get a lot of good-paying writing gigs by writing for tech companies. Start-ups tech companies are an easy way to get started. You can use a site like Angel List or LinkedIn to target the companies for who you can write.

You want the companies that are well funded and you can get this information by looking at their profiles on these sites. In the case of Angel List, you can see how much funding they are getting. If they have gotten a pant load of funding, then they would be a good target to approach for a client. However, if they don’t have squat in funding, you can skip them.

Also, if you cruise companies on LinkedIn you can find tech businesses to write for. It’s easy to tell which companies are doing well because they have a larger staff, better websites and already have decent content and sales pages on their sites. If they don’t have those elements on there, they probably don’t have the money to cough up for a decent copywriter.

So, if you want to make money from home writing for a tech company make sure you pick the ones who have the money to pay you.

Education

This is an area I’m real familiar with since I have been working in this field for quite some time. There are several different opportunities for you to make money in this market.

Some of the tasks I’ve performed are writing blog posts, course descriptions, and instructional design material. You can write for colleges, universities, private schools, trade schools, and private instructors. But the real money is in the bigger institutions. There are all kinds of jobs you can perform for them and they have rather large budgets.

Here are some of the different kinds of writing you can do for them:

  • Brochures
  • Video Advertising
  • Catalogs
  • Course Material
  • Blog Posts
  • Instructional Design Material

How to Make Money from Home Copywriting – Starting Today

Considering all the different kinds of gigs there are out there you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting started.  But, if you are a little queasy, you can always get started writing for yourself.  One of the first things I ever wrote was back in the days before there was an Internet.

I actually designed and marketed a piece of equipment for the United States Army Band program.   I used a Dan Kennedy piece to model my sales letter after and it worked so well I was totally hooked on copywriting.

But, if you know absolutely nothing about writing, you’re in luck.  Now we have the Internet and it’s loaded with websites that will show you how to get started.  And you’re in luck because I’ve already written a few posts on where you can learn this craft.
